Opposition MPs Demand Discussion on Manipur Issue in Indian Parliament
Several Members of Parliament (MPs) from opposition parties in India have demanded a discussion on the Manipur issue, which has caused a logjam in both Houses of Parliament. The MPs have given notices in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, seeking a discussion on the matter. Congress MPs Manish Tewari and Gaurav Gogoi have moved an Adjournment Motion Notice in Lok Sabha, while opposition Rajya Sabha MPs, including K Keshava Rao and Tiruchi Siva, have moved a Suspension of Business Notice under Rule 267. The Manipur issue has been a key reason for the continuous disruptions in Parliament since the Monsoon session began on July 20.
On Monday, both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha witnessed adjournments due to the ruckus created by opposition leaders demanding a discussion on the situation in Manipur. The government has expressed its willingness to engage in a dialogue on the matter, but the opposition’s insistence on a statement from Prime Minister Narendra Modi has led to repeated disruptions. Union Home Minister Amit Shah, urging the opposition to allow a discussion, said, It is very important that the truth comes out before the whole country.
In the meantime, a meeting of the members of the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (I.N.D.I.A) has been called to strategize the floor management in Rajya Sabha before the Upper House resumes its session. The Opposition parties are making efforts to find a way forward and ensure a smooth functioning of the Parliament.
The Monsoon session, which began with a long list of legislative business on the agenda, has faced constant hindrances due to the opposition’s protests, sloganeering, and disruptions over their demand for a statement from Prime Minister Modi on the Manipur situation. The Speaker and the Chairman have called for discipline and decorum in the House, emphasizing that institutions suffer when these values are compromised.
Union Minister Rajnath Singh has also reached out to senior opposition leaders, including Mallikarjun Kharge and Sudip Bandyopadhyay, urging them to ensure the smooth functioning of Parliament. Despite these efforts, the logjam continues, and the opposition is now demanding a discussion on the Manipur issue to address the concerns raised by the ongoing protests.
