Santa Barbara City College Football is preparing for a challenging season in its new division. After a successful 2022 campaign, where they finished with a dominant 10-1 record and secured their first outright conference title since 1991, the Vaqueros are gearing up to compete in the SCFA Northern Conference, known for featuring some of the best community college teams in Southern California.
Their upcoming schedule will pit them against formidable opponents such as Ventura, College of the Canyons, El Camino, Bakersfield, Allan Hancock, Antelope Valley, and Moorpark. Last year, Canyons, Hancock, and Ventura shared the Northern title, with Ventura advancing to the State Playoffs based on their superior overall record.
Ventura had an impressive run in 2018, reaching the State Championship game. Meanwhile, Allan Hancock has emerged victorious in three bowl games out of the last four seasons, and Canyons has consistently qualified for the state playoffs in recent years. El Camino and Bakersfield boast strong high school programs and have a rich football history, making the competition even tougher for Santa Barbara City College.
Head coach Moropoulos acknowledges the tough challenge that lies ahead for his team as they transition into the new division. With a predominantly freshman group, the players will have to mature quickly to face their seasoned opponents. Although the team lost three All-Region First Team members, including star quarterback Alex Johnson, who is now playing for the University of Washington, there are several returning impact players who will contribute to the Vaqueros’ efforts.
