In-N-Out Burger Faces Backlash for New Mask Policy Limitations

In-N-Out Burger, a popular fast-food chain on the West Coast, has recently come under fire for its new mask policy. According to a leaked memo and an official statement by the company’s Chief Operating Officer Denny Warnick, In-N-Out Burger will now require employees to provide a doctor’s note if they wish to wear a mask.

In the statement, Warnick argues that masks hinder communication, particularly nonverbal cues, and create a more disconnected environment. However, the leaked memo specifies that employees with medical reasons can still wear a company-provided N95 mask. Additionally, workers who need masks or other protective gear as part of their job duties are exempt from the new policy.

The policy is set to go into effect on August 14th in several states, including Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, Texas, and Utah. Notably, California and Oregon, where In-N-Out operates, are excluded from the policy, allowing employees in those states to continue wearing company-provided masks.

The news of In-N-Out’s new policy quickly spread on social media after it was leaked by a user known as luckytran. Many took to Twitter to express their disagreement with the decision. One Twitter user, DrJudyStone, who identifies as an infectious disease expert, raised concerns about the health risks this policy poses to employees and how it violates CDC guidelines. She used hashtags emphasizing that the COVID-19 pandemic is not over.

In-N-Out’s new policy has reignited the mask debate that emerged during the pandemic. While some argue that masks are safe and effective against COVID-19, others have questioned their efficacy and highlighted potential health effects such as itching, headaches, and restricted oxygen levels. A study published by The Cochrane Library even suggests that there’s no clear reduction in respiratory viral infection with the use of medical/surgical masks.

The controversy surrounding In-N-Out’s new policy is not the first time the company has clashed with COVID-19 regulations. Earlier this year, an In-N-Out location in Contra Costa County, California, was temporarily shut down for failing to check patrons’ vaccination status or negative test results. The incident resulted in fines and citations for violating health orders. A similar situation occurred in a San Francisco location.

As the pandemic recedes, with the head of the World Health Organization declaring it is no longer a public health emergency, and many states and counties making masks optional, In-N-Out’s decision has divided public opinion. Supporters argue that the choice should be left to individuals, while critics believe that mask-wearing should continue to prevent the spread of the virus.

The controversy surrounding In-N-Out Burger’s new mask policy highlights the ongoing disputes surrounding COVID-19 precautions. As with many contentious issues, opinions vary, and it remains important to present a balanced view, taking into account different perspectives and expert opinions.
