Prominent Dalit Activist Dies of Heart Attack During a City Council Hearing in California
In a tragic turn of events, Milind Makwana, a prominent Indian-American Dalit activist, passed away due to a heart attack while passionately speaking against a caste discrimination bill at a city council meeting in Cupertino, California. This unfortunate incident has sent shock waves throughout the Hindu American community in the country.
Milind Makwana had been actively opposing SB403, the anti-caste discrimination bill in the California State Assembly. He vehemently spoke against it during the City Council meeting, stating that the bill was against the interests of the Dalit community. Sadly, moments after the hearing, Makwana collapsed at the Cupertino City Council.
According to his wife, Purvi Makwana, Milind firmly believed that Dalits and Bahujan were an integral part of Hinduism. He was a strong advocate for justice for underprivileged communities and strived for trust and harmony among all communities. Purvi urged the community to support and carry forward Milind’s vision of justice, harmony, and Dharma.
Following his sudden demise, a fundraiser was initiated by the community, which successfully raised over USD 280,000. Living in a foreign land and assimilating into a new culture can be challenging for any immigrant community, and the Hindu community is no exception. Milind became deeply concerned about California’s SB403 Bill, which labeled the Hindu-American community based on caste. He believed that this law would only create divisions within the community rather than protecting the marginalized groups.
Milind Makwana, representing the Hindu community, was a marginalized Hindu himself due to the caste structure. However, he strongly opposed this law, considering it counterproductive and regressive. As an active volunteer at Sewa International USA, Milind contributed to relief work in Tamil Nadu during the massive floods in 2015. He regularly participated in various service activities and fundraising events organized by the California Bay Area Sewa chapter.
Arun Kankani, president of Sewa International, expressed his deep sorrow over Milind’s untimely demise. He described Milind as an exceptional volunteer and highlighted the importance of caring for one’s well-being. The unfortunate incident serves as a reminder of life’s fragility.
Milind Makwana’s contributions to the Hindu American community will always be remembered. His dedication to fighting for justice, harmony, and the dignity of marginalized communities has left a lasting impact. As the community mourns his loss, it is essential to carry forward Milind’s vision and continue working towards a society that embraces equality and unity.
