Title: Teniqua Jones’ Inspiring Journey: From Trauma to Triumph

Kiwi baking sensation Teniqua Jones has faced her fair share of challenges throughout her life, but none compared to the devastating accident that left her sister, Tirama Walker, paralyzed. Just weeks before Teniqua’s television debut on The Great Kiwi Bake Off, Tirama was involved in a drink-driving incident that left her unable to walk. However, in a remarkable turn of events, Tirama has defied the odds and is on a path to recovery, with hopes of starting a business alongside her talented sister.

Reflecting on her own setbacks, Teniqua says, When the premiere was coming up, I was embarrassed about being eliminated second, but then I went, ‘There’s worse things in my life. Who cares?’ This perspective shows the strength and resilience that Teniqua possesses, which has undoubtedly influenced her sister Tirama’s journey to overcome her own challenges.

Tirama’s accident, which occurred on Father’s Day 2021, resulted in a severed spine, leaving her paralyzed from the chest down. The doctors initially gave a grim prognosis, informing Tirama that she would never walk again. But Tirama refused to accept this fate and remained determined to prove them wrong. After weeks of grueling rehabilitation, she surprised everyone by wiggling her big toe. It was a small movement, but it filled her and her family with hope.

Tirama’s progress continued to astonish her medical team. Against all expectations, she took her first steps just three weeks later. This moment was a testament to Tirama’s unwavering belief in herself and the power of a positive mindset. With the support of her loving family, including her mother Desileeanne and sister Teniqua, Tirama has been able to persevere through the physical and emotional challenges that accompany her recovery.

Although Tirama still faces limitations, such as struggling to walk long distances and using a wheelchair for mobility, she remains optimistic about the future. With the assistance of her sister Teniqua, who serves as her kaiāwhina (home support worker) for 31 hours per week, Tirama continues to improve her strength and mobility. Together, they are dedicated to navigating the challenges and setbacks, one step at a time.

Amidst this difficult journey, both sisters have managed to achieve significant milestones. Teniqua’s baking business, Teniqua Kekery, has officially launched thanks to a grant from The Generator, a government initiative. Meanwhile, Tirama is eager to share her story and give hope to others. Having recognized the positive impact of makeup on her own spirits during her hospital stay, the sisters are considering launching a business that offers pampering sessions to patients, where Tirama can share her story and inspire others.

Tirama’s accident has brought to light the devastating consequences of drink-driving. She hopes that her story serves as a reminder to everyone to think twice before getting behind the wheel after consuming alcohol. As Tirama herself says, I’m a physical representation of what drink-driving can do. I hope everyone learns to put down the keys because it isn’t worth your life or others.

This incredible story of perseverance and resilience showcases the power of familial support and the importance of maintaining a positive mindset in the face of adversity. Teniqua and Tirama’s bond is unbreakable, and together, they prove that miracles can happen when determination meets love and support. As Tirama continues her rehabilitation and embraces the healing power of rongoā (traditional Māori healing), she is focused on not only regaining her physical abilities but also addressing her mental wellbeing.

Tirama’s journey serves as an inspiration to us all, reminding us that even in the face of unimaginable obstacles, the human spirit can prevail. With the unwavering support of her family and the love of her talented sister Teniqua, Tirama continues to defy the odds and create a future filled with hope and possibility.
