Federal High Court Remands Man for Smuggling Firearms into Nigeria

A 61-year-old man, Joseph Nwadiador, has been remanded in the custody of the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) by a Federal High Court in Lagos. Nwadiador is accused of smuggling firearms into Nigeria from the United States of America. Justice Nicholas Oweibo granted the remand order, following a request from the NCS.

According to the NCS, Nwadiador imported rifles and ammunition into the country in June. The NCS lawyer, Mrs. Kehinde Bode-Ayeni, who presented the motion ex-parte, stated that the remand request was necessary to facilitate the ongoing investigation into charges of conspiracy, unlawful importation of arms and ammunition, and improper importation. These offenses are prohibited and contrary to the CEMA Act, Cap. C45, L.F.N. 2004, and the Miscellaneous Offences Act, Cap. M17, LFN 2004.

The NCS argued that releasing Nwadiador on bail could potentially interfere with the investigation and obstruct the proper administration of justice. The prosecution emphasized that it is in the public’s interest to remand the suspect for 30 days.

Justice Oweibo, after careful consideration of the arguments and relevant authorities, granted the remand order sought by the prosecution. The suspect will remain in the custody of the Tin Can Island Port of the NCS in Apapa, Lagos State until the conclusion of the investigation.

The court’s decision comes as part of a larger effort by Nigerian law enforcement agencies to combat arms smuggling and illegal importation of firearms. The government is determined to prevent these illicit activities, which pose serious security risks to the nation.
