Peace and Prosperity in Mekong Region Crucial for India’s Act East Policy: EAM Jaishankar
India’s External Affairs Minister, S Jaishankar, emphasized the significance of peace and prosperity in the Mekong region in realizing India’s vision for security and growth in the region under its Act East policy. Speaking at the 12th Mekong Ganga Cooperation (MGC) Mechanism meeting, Jaishankar highlighted the historical and contemporary importance of the lower Mekong region for India.
We represent the ancient river civilizations of this continent, said Jaishankar, co-chairing the meeting with Lao PDR Foreign Minister, Saleumxay Kommasith. The MGC is a collaboration between India and five ASEAN countries – Cambodia, Lao PDR, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam, focusing on tourism, culture, education, as well as transport and communications.
Jaishankar stressed that peace and prosperity in the region are crucial for realizing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of security and growth for all under India’s Act East policy. The Mekong Ganga Cooperation holds a special place in the region as the oldest sub-regional cooperation rooted in historical, geographical, and cultural ties among the six member countries, he added.
The minister also highlighted India’s commitment to enhancing comprehensive connectivity within the region, extending beyond mere discussions. He emphasized various flagship projects, such as the MGC scholarships, the MGC traditional textile museum, and the Centre for Excellence in Software Development training, as examples of India’s dedication to on-ground implementation.
Additionally, India expressed its support for the Mekong sub-region’s initiative to synchronize various development projects in the region. Through collaborative efforts, the aim is to fulfill the contemporary aspirations of the people, fostering an environment of growth stability and shared opportunities, Jaishankar stated.
During the meeting, priority was given to the implementation of the India-Myanmar-Thailand Trilateral Highway, expediting the conclusion of the Motor Vehicles Agreement between the three countries. The establishment of a MGC Business Council to promote economic cooperation and exploring new areas of development partnership, including Quick Impact Projects, was also discussed.
Other topics covered included the expansion of exchanges in agriculture, science and technology, and water resource management, as well as the deepening of culture, tourism, and museum-based cooperation.
The 12th Mekong Ganga Cooperation Mechanism meeting underscored India’s commitment to fostering peace, prosperity, and growth in the Mekong region under its Act East policy. By prioritizing comprehensive connectivity, promoting economic cooperation, and implementing various flagship projects, India aims to strengthen ties and enhance the collective well-being of the member countries.
