Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James is set to change his jersey number once again for the upcoming 2023-24 season. After donning the No. 6 jersey for the past two seasons, James will be returning to his iconic No. 23. The decision comes as a mark of respect for NBA legend Bill Russell, as James’ agent, Rich Paul, confirmed to ESPN’s Dave McMenamin.

The No. 6 jersey was retired league-wide last year following Russell’s passing in July. However, players who were already wearing the number were given the option to continue doing so. In a gesture of admiration for Russell’s immense contribution to the sport, James has decided to switch back to No. 23.

When Russell passed away last summer at the age of 88, James expressed his deep admiration for the legendary player, both on and off the court. He acknowledged the tremendous impact Russell had made and how meaningful it was to share a jersey number with him.

Losing a figure as iconic as Bill Russell was a heart-wrenching experience for the basketball community. James spoke about Russell’s heroism and his significance to the NBA and the Celtics. He also emphasized Russell’s role in speaking out about uncomfortable issues and his importance to the Black community. James expressed his intention to wear No. 6 for the season, as a tribute to Russell and all he represented.

While James will be making a slight alteration to his jersey, his iconic No. 23 will still be easily recognizable. He previously wore this number during his initial three seasons with the Lakers, as well as during his stints with the Cleveland Cavaliers. During his successful tenure with the Miami Heat, James wore No. 6.

The decision to change jersey numbers is a personal one for James. It reflects his deep respect for the late Bill Russell and the profound impact Russell had on the game of basketball. By donning the No. 23 once again, James pays homage to a true NBA icon.

Fans can look forward to seeing James back in his familiar No. 23 jersey when the 2023-24 season tips off. The change in number serves as a reminder of the lasting legacy that legends like Bill Russell leave behind. It showcases the interconnectedness of basketball’s past and present, and the respect players have for those who came before them.
