New York Jets’ first-round pick, Mekhi Becton, may finally be in the best shape of his NFL career. Selected as the 11th overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, the offensive tackle has yet to make the instant impact the Jets had hoped for. However, Becton’s struggles may stem from his own lack of fitness in previous seasons.

There have been reports that the 6-foot-7 tackle has weighed as much as 380 pounds at times, which could be hindering his agility on the field. While his size is expected for his position, a bit more flexibility and mobility would undoubtedly benefit his performance and long-term health.

Nevertheless, it wouldn’t be fair to solely blame Becton for his struggles. In his rookie season, he started 13 games but was plagued by injuries in his second year, including a knee surgery that sidelined him for the entire 2022 season. As a result, Becton has played just one game since September 2021, leaving the Jets to rely on alternative options like veteran left tackle Duane Brown.

Despite these setbacks, there is still hope for Becton to turn his fortunes around in the 2023 season. The 24-year-old is reportedly making an effort to shed some weight, currently weighing in at around 340 pounds, according to Pro Football Network. If he can stay healthy and continue on this trajectory, Becton might have an opportunity to reclaim his starting role in New York.

However, New York Jets coach Robert Saleh has emphasized the importance of Becton earning his place on the field. The tackle will need to prove himself through hard work, dedication, and consistent performance to secure his spot.

In conclusion, Mekhi Becton’s NFL journey has faced its fair share of obstacles, from weight issues to injury setbacks. The upcoming season provides him with a chance to bounce back and showcase his potential as the Jets’ cornerstone offensive lineman. With a reported weight loss and a determined mindset, Becton could finally make the impact expected of a first-round pick. But ultimately, it will be up to him to earn his way back into the lineup and prove his worth to the team.
