Israeli judoka Raz Hershko has made history by becoming the number one ranked senior female competitor in the world, according to the International Judo Federation. This achievement marks the first time that an Israeli has reached the top of the rankings in the sport.
The rankings include over 2,000 women aged 17 and above from more than 200 countries, encompassing all weight classes. Hershko, 25, expressed her excitement and gratitude for the recognition but emphasized that it is just a milestone along her journey in the sport.
Hershko’s aunt, Shani Hershko, who is also the coach of the Israeli national judo team, praised her niece’s determination and hard work. She stated that they actively seek out challenging fights without making any assumptions or excuses, always striving to make history in every possible way. The coach echoed Raz Hershko’s sentiments that this achievement is just a stepping stone towards further historic accomplishments.
Moshe Ponte, the president of the Israel Judo Association, commended Hershko on her success, describing her as not only an exceptional athlete but also an inspiring individual. He highlighted her ranking as the result of her tireless efforts, as well as the efforts of Shani Hershko and the entire Israeli national women’s team.
Earlier this year, Hershko secured Israel’s second gold medal at the international judo championships in Tel Aviv. Her victory came a day after fellow Olympian Sagi Muki clinched Israel’s first gold medal of the Grand Slam. In addition to these achievements, Hershko won the silver medal at the Ulaanbaatar Grand Slam in Mongolia in the 78-kilogram category and claimed bronze at the world championships in Qatar.
Hershko’s rise to the top of the international judo rankings is a testament to her skill, determination, and relentless pursuit of excellence.
