In a unique and commendable move, the owner of a two-storey building in Mangaluru has chosen to shift his entire commercial complex instead of demolishing a portion of it to facilitate the widening of National Highway-169. G Rajesh Pai, the proud owner of a 6,000 square feet building, has taken the extraordinary step of hiring a Haryana-based company to relocate his property 130 feet away from its current location. This decision showcases Pai’s commitment to preserving his building, which holds sentimental value, while also accommodating the necessary infrastructure developments.
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) had initially identified a section of Pai’s building for demolition to make way for the highway expansion. However, unwilling to see his beloved structure reduced to rubble, Pai embarked on an extensive search for an alternative. After conducting thorough research and studying various building shifting technologies, Pai finally entrusted the task to HSBL Building Solutions Pvt Ltd, an expert company known for its proficiency in moving structures.
The process of shifting the building, which began a month ago, is expected to be completed within a few months. To execute this remarkable feat, around 500 hydraulic jacks will be strategically placed after excavating the area near the building’s foundation. Through controlled lifting, the building will be gradually raised by about one foot before being slowly transferred along specially laid rail tracks to its new location. Once relocated, a new foundation will be laid beneath the building. Moreover, the company has provided a 30-year guarantee for the shifted building and has assured that two additional floors can be constructed upon it.
Speaking about his decision to move the building, Pai highlighted his emotional connection with the structure. The building holds deep significance for him, as it was inaugurated by Sri Sudheendra Thirtha Swami, a revered spiritual leader. Furthermore, demolishing a portion of the building would have resulted in inadequate parking space, which Pai wanted to avoid.
This innovative approach to building preservation not only highlights Pai’s dedication to maintaining a significant piece of his personal history but also sets a precedent for future infrastructure projects. By opting to relocate the two-storey building instead of tearing it down, Pai has demonstrated that progress and preservation can go hand in hand.
