An early morning fire at the Alligator and Wildlife Discovery Center in Madeira Beach, Florida has resulted in the tragic loss of nearly all the animals housed at the facility. According to officials, the fire broke out around 3 a.m. on Thursday, devastating the center and leaving its owners and staff heartbroken.
The wildlife center took to their Facebook page to share the devastating news, stating, We suffered from a tragic fire last night. Nearly all of the animals are gone. We are devastated. Sonny Flynn, the owner of the center, expressed his grief to local news outlet WTSP, revealing that all of the mammals inside the building perished, while many of the reptiles sustained injuries. The center was home to approximately 250 animals including small mammals, lizards, amphibians, turtles, tortoises, and alligators.
Flynn also shared that the majority of the animals at the center were pet surrenders from individuals who were unable to properly care for them. He described the animals as having names and personalities, emphasizing the deep connection he had with them. This is my whole life, Flynn said, likening his bond with the animals to that of Dr. Dolittle.
Upon arrival at the scene, the Madeira Beach Fire Department encountered heavy flames and smoke coming from the front of the building. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
