In a significant breakthrough, the Thane Crime Branch apprehended a 27-year-old man and seized a country-made machine gun, 20 country-made pistols, 270 cartridges, and two magazines near the Maharashtra-Madhya Pradesh border. The arrest was made following a tipoff, and this marks the second significant firearms seizure within a span of just over a month.
The accused, identified as Surjitsingh Avsingh, hails from Umarti village in Madhya Pradesh’s Badwani district, known for its notorious involvement in the illegal arms trade. Senior Inspector Vikas Ghodke of Crime Branch Unit-5 revealed that the cost of a single pistol can range up to Rs 40,000, depending on the buyer’s preferences.
Avsingh was already a wanted criminal in connection with an illegal firearm possession case registered at the Wagle Estate police station back in November 2022. In that case, three individuals had already been apprehended. Acting on the tip provided, the police laid a trap for Avsingh near Palasner and successfully arrested him along with the illegal firearms.
The accused was produced before a local magistrate’s court, where he was remanded into police custody until July 18.
This seizure is a testament to the relentless efforts of the Thane Crime Branch in tackling the rampant illegal arms trade. With a swift and well-executed operation, the authorities have curbed the further circulation of these dangerous weapons, which could potentially be misused for criminal activities.
The robust investigation carried out by the Thane Crime Branch, combined with the valuable tipoff received, resulted in the apprehension of Avsingh and the subsequent confiscation of the extensive arsenal. Such operations play a vital role in maintaining law and order and ensuring the safety and security of the public.
Efforts to neutralize illegal arms manufacturing and trading hubs like Umarti village are crucial to dismantle these criminal networks. Stricter vigilance and monitoring of the Maharashtra-Madhya Pradesh border can help prevent the inflow of illegal weapons into the region.
The seizure not only serves as a blow to these illegal activities but also helps in ensuring the safety and well-being of the citizens. The Thane Crime Branch has been instrumental in curbing the menace of illegal firearms and is committed to upholding the law.
It is commendable that the Thane Crime Branch continues to make significant strides in their crackdown on the illegal arms trade, safeguarding the community against potential harm.
