Title: The Open Championship 2023 Prize Money: Record Payout Revealed for Royal Liverpool

The winner of the 151st Open Championship at Royal Liverpool Golf Club will receive a record-breaking prize of $3 million (£2.3 million), as the R&A announced a remarkable prize fund for this year’s tournament. A staggering total of $16.5 million (£12.7 million) will be up for grabs, marking an 18% increase compared to last year’s event held at St Andrews.

With first place securing a figure exceeding £2 million, this represents a substantial rise of $500,000 (£387,000) from the previous year’s reward claimed by Australia’s Cameron Smith. The runner-up will still take home a respectable $1.7 million (£1.31 million), while the player in third position can expect just over $1 million (£774,000).

The CEO of the R&A, Martin Slumbers, expressed the organization’s commitment to ensuring The Open remains at the pinnacle of world golf. He stated, Our aim is to ensure The Open remains at the pinnacle of world golf and we have almost doubled the prize fund since 2016. While we are seeing substantial increases in prize money across the men’s professional game, we are fulfilling our wider obligation to the sport by elevating the AIG Women’s Open, strengthening pathways in the elite amateur game and encouraging more people around the world to play golf. We believe that getting this balance right is vital to the long-term future of the sport.

Scheduled to commence on July 20 and conclude on July 23, the competition is expected to attract top golfers from around the globe. Among the leading candidates to claim glory are the likes of Rory McIlroy and Jon Rahm. Following this event, golf’s oldest major will return to Merseyside in three years’ time, with Royal Birkdale being confirmed as the host venue for The Open in 2026.
