Anthropic, an AI startup known for developing a safer type of chatbot, has unveiled the latest version of its AI bot called Claude. This synthetic intelligence chatbot, Claude 2, is now available to users in the US and UK through the website claude.ai, and businesses can access it using an application programming interface (API). This launch comes a few months after Anthropic introduced an earlier version of the bot to companies, including Quora Inc., which integrated it into an app called Poe.
Similar to its predecessor, Claude 2 is built on a large language model and can be utilized for various written tasks such as summarizing, searching, answering questions, and even coding. Both models are capable of processing large amounts of text, allowing users to request summaries of books, among other things. However, Claude 2 can generate longer responses than its predecessor, with answers reaching up to approximately 3,000 words, according to data provided by Anthropic. Additionally, Claude 2 offers more accurate responses on specific subjects such as coding and grade-school-level math.
One of Anthropic’s key objectives has been to create a chatbot that is less susceptible to manipulation compared to other chatbots in the market. The company intends to control the generation of harmful or offensive content in response to prompts, an issue that has plagued rival chatbots like OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Anthropic stated that its tests have shown that Claude 2 is superior to the current model in producing innocent responses to dangerous prompts.
Daniela Amodei, President and Co-founder of Anthropic, mentioned that the newer model aims to feel, subjectively, a little bit better than its predecessor, while acknowledging that it still has limitations. Despite this, Anthropic’s approach reflects caution in the development and release of AI systems, highlighting the potential transformative impact they can have on various industries.
Based in San Francisco, Anthropic was established in 2021 by a group of former OpenAI employees, including Daniela Amodei and her brother Dario Amodei. The company recently announced raising $450 million in funding, bringing its total funding to over $1 billion. Anthropic plans to expand access to Claude to more countries in the coming months.
With Claude 2, Anthropic continues to push the boundaries of AI chatbot technology while addressing concerns surrounding its safe and responsible usage. By prioritizing user safety and striving for accurate and harmless responses, Anthropic aims to establish Claude as a trusted and reliable tool for businesses and individuals alike.
