Apple Sees Market Share Growth for Mac Amid Decline in Global PC Shipments in Q2
Global personal computer shipments experienced a slower decline in the second quarter, with Apple emerging as a standout performer, according to research firm Canalys. Apple witnessed a 51 percent surge in shipments, largely driven by strong demand for its recently launched 15-inch MacBook Air. This growth comes as the industry shows early signs of recovery from the pandemic-induced slump, with consumers and businesses expected to boost equipment upgrades.
Canalys reported a 12 percent decline in the worldwide PC market in Q2 2023, significantly smaller than the over-30 percent drops witnessed in the previous two quarters. The market benefitted from robust back-to-school demand, suggesting that the challenges faced by the sector are starting to diminish. There are indications that many of the issues that have affected the sector are beginning to abate, remarked Ishan Dutt, principal analyst at Canalys.
Apple dominated among major PC makers, witnessing shipments of 6.8 million units and expanding its market share from 6.4 percent to 11 percent YoY. Supply chain hurdles eased for Apple, enabling the company to meet demand for its new MacBook Air. Meanwhile, market leader Lenovo saw a decline of 18.1 percent in shipments, an improvement from the previous quarter’s 30.3 percent drop. HP and Dell also experienced smaller declines compared to the prior quarter.
According to Kieren Jessop, research analyst at Canalys, inventory levels further reduced in Q2, but all customer segments are expected to improve sequentially for the rest of 2023. This improvement is fueled by final inventory corrections and stronger seasonality in the latter half of the year.
However, Canalys predicts that overall PC shipments in 2023 will be lower than in 2022 as consumers prioritize spending on essential items amidst high inflation and rising interest rates.
As the news of Apple’s market share growth emerges, the technology giant continues to make its mark in the PC market. With its innovative lineup and consumer demand, Apple’s success paints a promising picture for the industry’s recovery. As the months progress, the PC market expects further stabilization and increased consumer confidence, providing a positive outlook for the future.
