The Indian armed forces are set to establish their first Integrated Theatre Command (ITC) in August this year, as the process of reorganization is reaching its advanced stages. This move is aimed at enhancing inter-service synergy and jointmanship. According to sources in the defense establishment, the announcement regarding the ITC could be made on the occasion of the 77th Independence Day.
The initial step in this process involves designating the South Western Command, located in Jaipur, as the inaugural theatre command. This command will act as an experimental Integrated Theatre Command, responsible for identifying and resolving deficiencies, tackling challenges, and implementing necessary adjustments. By functioning as a test-bed, the South Western Command will play a crucial role in addressing the shortcomings and challenges that may arise during the establishment of the ITC.
Following the establishment of the South Western Command as the experimental theatre command, the Lucknow-based Northern Theatre Command is expected to be the next one to be announced. And the third one will be the Maritime Theatre Command, which will be headquartered at Karwar in Karnataka. This command will be responsible for overseeing the coastal and maritime boundaries.
The introduction of these theatre commands is being carried out in accordance with the concept of One Border One Force. The objective of an integrated theatre command is to establish a unified command structure for the three services, under a single commander, in strategically significant regions or theatres.
The Western Integrated Theatre Command will be responsible for the defense and security of the border areas with Pakistan. The Northern Integrated Theatre Command, headquartered in Lucknow, will assume responsibility for the border areas with China and will be housed within the Army’s Central Command, which currently operates in that region.
It is important to note that the establishment of the ITC will not result in additional posts or ranks. Instead, personnel will be drawn from the existing command structures of the services. At present, the Indian Armed Forces have a total of 17 commands, with the Indian Army and Indian Air Force each having seven commands, while the Indian Navy has three.
Discussions are underway regarding the appointment of the first integrated theatre commander. Based on the principle of seniority, Lt. Gen. RP Kalita, who currently heads the Kolkata-based Eastern Command, is a strong contender for that position. Another option being considered is Lt. Gen. BS Raju, the current commander of the South Western Army.
The retirement age for the Integrated Theatre Commander will be set at 61 years. In comparison, the service chiefs serve for three years or until the age of 62, whichever comes earlier. Lieutenant Generals and officers with equivalent ranks currently retire at the age of 60.
The establishment of the first Integrated Theatre Command marks a significant milestone in enhancing the coordination and collaboration among India’s armed forces. It signifies a strategic shift towards a more unified and integrated approach to address security challenges in different theatres, ensuring a more effective defense system.
