Zelenskiy Expresses Disappointment as Nato Allies Fail to Set Timetable for Ukraine’s Membership

In the midst of the two-day Nato summit in Lithuania’s capital, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy voiced his dissatisfaction with the alliance’s delayed decision on Ukraine’s membership. He criticized certain Nato leaders who have been reluctant to provide a clear timetable for the country’s accession, labeling it as absurd. Zelenskiy stressed the importance of certainty, stating that he intends to openly discuss this matter during the summit.

While Nato supports Ukraine in its ongoing conflict with Russia’s special military operation, some members, notably US President Joe Biden, oppose specifying a timetable for Ukraine’s membership. Instead, the summit is expected to focus on reaffirming the alliance’s commitment to providing arms shipments and emphasizing that Ukraine’s place in the alliance is certain once the war is won.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz of Germany revealed that the G7 group of major industrialized economies would extend a package of support to Ukraine once peace is obtained. French President Emmanuel Macron added that France would join Britain in supplying long-range cruise missiles to aid Ukraine in striking Russian targets deeply entrenched within its territory.

However, these offerings are unlikely to satisfy Zelenskiy, as his forces continue to launch a counteroffensive to reclaim Russian-occupied areas, resulting in an alarming increase in casualties. Zelenskiy expressed his disappointment, stating that there seems to be no readiness from Nato to invite Ukraine or make it a member. He further highlighted that certain wording is being discussed without Ukraine’s involvement, leaving room for negotiations with Russia, which could motivate Russia to persist in its hostile actions.

Despite the concerns voiced by both Ukraine and Russia, Nato Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg conveyed a positive message to Ukraine, buoyed by Turkey’s decision to lift its veto on Sweden’s membership. Stoltenberg assured that a clear path forward would be communicated through the summit’s communique, which would be made public within hours.

As the Nato leaders gathered in the Lithuanian capital, German Patriot missile systems and French fighter jets stood guard in the skies, underscoring the ongoing commitment to ensure regional security.

While tensions continue to simmer between Russia and Ukraine, it is crucial to note the differing perspectives and opinions on the matter. Moscow and Kyiv vehemently disagree, evidenced by Russia denouncing the strong anti-Russian character of the meeting. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov warned Sweden’s imminent arrival in the alliance could jeopardize Russia’s security and cautioned France about delivering SCALP missiles.

Amidst these contrasting viewpoints, it is essential to consider the potential consequences of actions taken by Nato member states and the impact they may have on the region’s overall security dynamics. As the summit progresses, the global community eagerly awaits the outcomes and decisions that will shape Ukraine’s future and determine its place within the Nato alliance.
