Greek Room Project Harnesses AI to Speed Up Bible Translation Process

A team of specialists in California has embarked on an innovative initiative known as the Greek Room project, utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) to improve and expedite the Bible translation process. Led by Ulf Hermjakob, a senior research scientist at the University of Southern California’s Information Sciences Institute (ISI), and Joel Mathew, a research engineer at the institute, the team aims to develop tools that enhance the efficiency of Bible translation.

Collaborating with the renowned Wycliffe Bible Translators, the project’s name pays tribute to the original language of the New Testament. The goal is to tackle the formidable task of translating the Bible into languages that currently lack a written version of God’s Word. While approximately 3,500 languages have at least one book of the Bible, there are more than 6,000 languages that lack a comprehensive version, making this project both essential and ambitious.

The translation of the Bible is an extensive and intricate endeavor, often spanning more than a decade for completion. Out of the world’s 7,100 languages, only about 700 possess a complete copy of the Bible. The Greek Room project, however, has set its sights on low-resource languages that are not even among the top 500 prioritized by Google Translate, according to Ulf Hermjakob.

Joel Mathew believes that software technology has the potential to significantly expedite and enhance the translation process. While certain aspects of translation pose little debate, other linguistic nuances require human intervention due to their subjective nature. Mathew provided an example of the challenge faced when translating a passage such as Behold I stand at the door and knock for a culture that does not have a concept of a door. The Greek Room project allows translators to devote more time and attention to such intricate translations.

The project utilizes a word aligner, a computer program that compares translated Scripture to its original language source, enabling translators to detect inconsistencies and propose solutions to foster clarity in understanding. Hermjakob and Mathew’s vision for the Greek Room project extends beyond their initial efforts; they aspire to share the platform as an open-source tool, making their data and code public and available to translators worldwide.

While AI offers vast potential for Christian ministry, some individuals emphasize that missionaries cannot be replaced by automation. However, the proliferation of AI applications holds great promise for language interactions in ministry work. Ted Esler, president of Missio Nexus, asserts that the ability to overcome language barriers will undergo significant transformations in the coming years.

With the Greek Room project’s dedication to leveraging AI technology and its collaboration with Wycliffe Bible Translators, hope remains high for making the Bible accessible to even the most remote language communities. By harnessing the power of AI, this initiative seeks to shorten the lengthy and arduous Bible translation process, fulfilling the mission of bringing God’s Word to all corners of the world.
