Former All Black rugby player, Carl Hayman, has suffered serious injuries following a bike accident in Mangawhai. The incident occurred on Pearl St at around 11 am, and Hayman was found in a cold, wet ditch with possible hypothermia and a broken collarbone. He was subsequently airlifted to Whangarei Hospital.

Hayman’s recent accident comes just a week after the release of his memoir, Head On: An All Black’s memoir of rugby, dementia, and the hidden cost of success. In his book, the 43-year-old former professional rugby player opened up about the exploitation he faced during his rugby career and the challenges he has since endured, including a diagnosis of dementia.

During his playing days, Hayman was known for his dominance in the front row, but his health has deteriorated since retiring due to his diagnosis of dementia and the degenerative brain condition, chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). Hayman and fellow All Black, Geoff Old, have been in contact with British-based lawyers to explore legal action against World Rugby and the England and Wales rugby unions. They allege that these organizations failed to protect them from permanent injuries resulting from repeated concussions.

Hayman initially declined brain damage testing offers related to his playing career, but he eventually relented, recognizing the potential impact his story could have on current and future players. Now, he is among more than 100 former rugby players taking legal action against the sporting bodies mentioned earlier.

Last year, Hayman made headlines for a different reason when he was convicted of drink-driving in ÅŒpunake, south Taranaki. He was caught driving with a blood alcohol level over four times the legal limit. At the time, Hayman admitted to being in a difficult emotional state, dealing with early onset dementia, depression, and the recent loss of his mother.

The incident has once again highlighted the ongoing concern surrounding player safety in contact sports, particularly regarding the risk of head injuries and their long-term effects. Hayman’s case serves as an important reminder of the potential consequences athletes may face, even after retiring from their chosen sport.

As Hayman continues his recovery from the bike accident, his story resonates with players and fans alike. It sparks conversations about the importance of protecting athletes’ well-being and serves as a crucial catalyst for change within the sporting community.

The rugby world, along with fans and supporters, stands hopeful for Hayman’s recovery and remains eager to see his advocacy for player safety contribute to positive developments within the sport.
