Singapore’s clean energy sector is set to experience substantial growth in its workforce, with a projected increase of 80 percent by 2032, according to the Energy Market Authority’s (EMA) Energy Sector Manpower Survey (ESMS) 2022. This growth is a testament to Singapore’s energy transition gaining momentum and the increasing focus on clean energy solutions.

The ESMS highlights that job functions such as electricity transmission and distribution solutions, low-carbon alternatives, solar energy, and smart grids will see significant expansion. This growth presents promising job opportunities for Singapore residents, who currently make up 83 percent of the clean energy workforce, with engineers comprising the majority of the technical workforce.

In addition to the increase in traditional clean energy job roles, there is also anticipated growth in digital and Industry 4.0 job functions, including data analytics and Operational Technology cybersecurity. Workers in these areas will require skills in data management, data engineering, and security solutions implementation to meet the demands of the evolving clean energy industry.

To further drive the Singapore Energy Transition, the EMA is ramping up research and development (R&D) efforts in clean energy solutions. One initiative includes the launched 2nd Energy Storage Systems (ESS) Grant Call, which invites collaboration between industry and researchers to develop more efficient and safe energy storage solutions suitable for Singapore’s urbanized environment and land constraints. The integration of energy storage technologies is crucial for enhancing grid reliability and facilitating the seamless integration of renewable energy sources.

In support of innovation and R&D in the clean energy sector, the EMA, with assistance from Enterprise Singapore (EnterpriseSG), has awarded grants to three local energy startups. These startups, Power Facade, Ampotech, and EtaVolt, are working on innovative solutions to accelerate the adoption of Building Applied Photovoltaics, optimize air-conditioning technologies in buildings, maximize solar photovoltaic performance, and ensure the efficient recycling of solar panels. These initiatives aim to promote clean energy adoption, improve energy efficiency, and enhance circularity within the sector.

The EMA’s commitment to fostering innovation, digital transformation, and R&D will help develop a future-ready clean energy sector, creating more job opportunities for Singaporeans and supporting the nation’s energy transition. The focus on clean energy solutions not only contributes to a sustainable future but also unlocks opportunities for local enterprises. By prioritizing clean energy adoption and promoting energy efficiency, Singapore is solidifying its position as a leader in the clean energy industry.

As the clean energy sector grows in Singapore, it is crucial to continuously develop the necessary skills and expertise to meet the demands of the evolving industry. The projected workforce growth and investments in R&D demonstrate Singapore’s commitment to equipping its workforce for a digitalized and sustainable future. Through collaborations, grants, and innovation, Singapore is paving the way for a greener and more resilient energy landscape.
