How a Public Health Program in Maryland is Improving Healthcare Access for Latino Communities

A public health program in Montgomery County, Maryland, is dedicated to improving healthcare access for the Latino community. The Latino Health Initiative (LHI) recently completed a community health worker program, aimed at providing essential health information to Latino residents and helping them navigate the healthcare system. This program, conducted in Spanish, has proven successful in creating awareness and access to various health services and programs.

The program participants, known as promotadores or community health workers, underwent a comprehensive six-month training program. They received 100 hours of instruction and an additional 40 hours of practice to enhance their skills. The majority of participants were women, although some men also enrolled. Due to its success, the next session scheduled for August already has a waitlist.

Gianina Hasbun, a program specialist with the Latino Health Initiative, highlighted the importance of promoting awareness about available services and programs. Many individuals are not aware of the resources accessible to them, which poses a significant challenge. The role of the promotadores is to bridge this knowledge gap and ensure the Latino community has access to necessary healthcare services.

In addition to helping residents navigate the healthcare system, the promotadores focus on various health issues, including the significance of healthy eating, physical activity, and mental health. Mental health care, in particular, remains a challenge for many due to issues of access and stigma. The LHI aims to address these barriers and provide culturally sensitive support to the community.

The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the effectiveness of community outreach efforts. In collaboration with an external agency, the LHI introduced a character known as Abuelina, a grandmother-like figure, to deliver messages on the importance of COVID-19 vaccination. Since its introduction in 2020, Abuelina has played a crucial role in promoting vaccination within the Latino population. As of August 2021, an impressive 95% of the county’s Latino population had received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.

The community health worker program provided by the LHI is accredited by the Maryland Department of Health. Each participant undergoes evaluation to obtain certification, further highlighting the program’s quality and effectiveness.

By leveraging the trust and influence of community members, the Latino Health Initiative is making remarkable strides in improving public health among Latino residents in Montgomery County, Maryland. Through their dedicated efforts, they are breaking down barriers, providing valuable health information, and ensuring access to healthcare services for all.
