Local Authors Showcase Talents at Tehachapi Heritage League’s Authors Day

The Tehachapi community recently discovered that their small town is home to a significant number of published authors. During the Tehachapi Heritage League’s Authors Day event held in the Errea Garden, 10 local authors had the opportunity to share their work and connect with readers.

Among the group of talented authors was Saida Woolf, the youngest writer in attendance. Woolf, who started writing before high school, is currently in her second year at San Jose State University. Her fantasy comic work has gained popularity worldwide, particularly among young readers.

On the other end of the spectrum, Pat Gracey, the oldest author at the event, captivated the audience with his extensive knowledge and memories of the early days in Tehachapi. Gracey’s presence added a unique perspective to the event and showcased the rich history of the town.

Cindy Waldman, the author of the Coyote Canyon Series, brought her latest book to the event. Set in the local area, Waldman’s fictional stories have resonated with readers who appreciate relatable narratives. Although she claims it is the last book in the series, Waldman is already contemplating her next writing endeavor.

Linda McDermott’s books delve into her extraordinary travels and life experiences. Her unique perspective and adventurous spirit have attracted readers interested in exploring the world through her writing. Mel White, another local author, offers observations on life and imparts valuable advice to readers seeking guidance.

The event also showcased authors who focused on historical subjects. Clyde Davis and Craig Luther both shared their knowledge through books that shed light on Tehachapi’s past. Sandy Lander proudly represented her late husband, Todd, who authored a book about his experiences in Vietnam, providing readers with a poignant perspective on this significant part of history.

Rebecca Langston, a former teacher who once attended elementary school in Tehachapi, attended the event as a celebrated author. Langston has contributed various works to children’s magazines and has written numerous books. The warm reception she received from two of her former teachers, Phyllis Belcher and Georgette Theotig, added a heartwarming touch to the event.

In addition to the established authors, there were two first-time writers eager to share their stories. Julie Apathy, a retired teacher of 22 years, wrote about the joys and challenges of parenting adult children. As she contemplates her next literary venture, readers eagerly await what she will bring to the table. Shane McGarret’s book centers around her experiences as a woman jet mechanic, providing a unique perspective in a male-dominated field.

For those interested in exploring the works of these talented authors, many of their books are available for purchase at the Tehachapi Museum. Located at 310 S. Green St., the museum is open to the public on Saturdays and Sundays from noon to 4 p.m.

The success and diversity of the authors at Tehachapi Heritage League’s Authors Day is a testament to the vibrant literary community thriving within Tehachapi. The event not only showcased the talents of these local authors but also fostered connections between writers and readers. It’s clear that Tehachapi is a town brimming with creativity and literary passion, and we can’t wait to see what stories these talented authors will share next.
