Delhi Court Frames Charges Against Six Men for Burning Man Alive During 2020 Riots
In a significant development, Delhi’s Karkardooma court has framed charges against six individuals involved in the horrific incident of setting Shahbaz on fire, resulting in his death during the 2020 riots in north-east Delhi. The court established that the act was premeditated with the intention to seek revenge against the Muslim community.
Additional Sessions Judge Pulastya Pramachala presided over the framing of charges against Aman, Vikram, Rahul Sharma, Ravi Sharma, Dinesh Sharma, and Ranjeet Rana. The charges include murder, rioting, attacking a specific community, dacoity, and criminal conspiracy.
According to the court, several witnesses have testified to seeing the act, which was carried out in a pre-planned manner and in active coordination with each other.
The court’s order states, The sole aim of the mob was to take revenge from the Muslim community. It further adds that there is evidence indicating that the accused individuals were part of a mob that had gathered on February 24, 2020, with the intent to incite riots the following day.
The accused joined this mob fully aware of the plan. They actively participated in an unlawful assembly, whose common objective was to cause harm and damage to the person and property of the Muslim community. This violated the provisions of Section 144 CrPC, promoting enmity between different religious groups, eventually resulting in the killing of the victim, Shahbaz, the court explained.
One of the accused, Mr. Aman, has also been charged under Section 412 of the Indian Penal Code for possessing Shahbaz’s wristwatch, which was recovered from him and identified during the judicial Test Identification Parade.
The incident in question pertains to the death of Shahbaz, who was burned alive on February 25, 2020. The body of the deceased was discovered by a Sub-Inspector after a complaint about Shahbaz’s disappearance was lodged with the Khajuri Khas Police Station.
The victim’s family informed the police that Shahbaz had gone to buy medicines for his eyes and had become trapped in the riots. It was during the search for him that a person named Ankit informed them that Shahbaz had been burned alive. The identification of the remains was confirmed through a DNA test with the deceased’s father.
