Shivakumar’s Surprise Visit Restarts Operations at Waste Processing Plants

The recent surprise visit by Deputy Chief Minister and Bengaluru Development Minister D.K. Shivakumar to waste processing plants in the city has yielded positive results. One of the plants that had been shut down due to public opposition resumed work immediately after his visit. Furthermore, measures were put in place to fully utilize the waste processing capacity at other plants.

Bengaluru is home to seven processing plants, with at least three of them having ceased operations during the Assembly elections due to strong objections from the public. However, Shivakumar’s visit to the Seegehalli plant in Yelahanka on Sunday resulted in its restart. This particular plant has the capacity to process 120 tonnes of wet waste and had been closed due to opposition from residents. A Bengaluru Bruhat Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) official mentioned that with this plant now operational again, the overall processing capacity has increased.

During his visit, Shivakumar also inspected the Kannahalli and Doddabidarakallu plants. The Kannahalli plant is currently operating at full capacity, processing 350 tonnes of waste, while the Doddabidarakallu plant, despite having a capacity of 150 tonnes, is currently processing 110 tonnes. Shivakumar directed the officials to further enhance the capacity at these plants.

According to a senior BBMP official, both the KCDC plants at Kudlu and Chikkanagamangala had faced opposition from residents and certain political leaders, leading to their closure during the Assembly polls. However, both plants are now up and running. The official highlighted that the operation of all seven plants often encounters challenges due to the unpleasant odor they emanate. With the Deputy Chief Minister’s keen interest in running the plants, the BBMP intends to persuade him to keep the plants running throughout the year, emphasizing to the public the necessity of these facilities to handle the city’s substantial waste generation.
