Man Sells Tomatoes Below Cost Price to Help Needy in Chennai: A Gesture of Kindness Amid Rising Prices
In a heartwarming act of kindness, a 38-year-old man in Chennai sold tomatoes at a significantly lower price to help those in need. D Rajesh, the owner of D R Vegetables and onion shop in Sellakupam, bought 550 kilograms of tomatoes from Bengaluru and sold them at a loss of ₹40 per kilo.
Amid skyrocketing tomato prices in Chennai, where they are currently being sold at ₹100-130 per kilo, Rajesh’s benevolent gesture offered a much-needed respite to the consumers. He purchased the tomatoes at ₹60 per kilo, including transportation charges, in an effort to make this concession accessible to as many people as possible.
To ensure fair distribution and prevent stockpiling, Rajesh limited the purchase to one kilo per person. This enabled a larger number of people to benefit from the reduced price. Within a matter of minutes, the entire stock of 550 kilograms was sold out. The overwhelming response demonstrates the impact an act of kindness can have on a community.
This is not the first time Rajesh has offered discounts to customers during difficult times. He shared a heartwarming incident from 2019 when he sold onions at ₹10 per kilo during a period of soaring prices. His intention was to celebrate the opening of his shop and provide relief to customers burdened by high onion costs.
It is evident that Rajesh, with over 30 years of experience working in his uncle’s shop, understands the struggles faced by consumers when prices escalate. His compassionate approach and dedication to serving the community set an example for other businesses.
In an attempt to bring some respite to consumers, the state government of Tamil Nadu recently decided to sell tomatoes at a subsidized rate of ₹68 per kilo at ration shops. This initiative aims to alleviate the burden on consumers and ensure access to essential produce.
Rajesh’s commitment to helping those in need, even at the cost of his own profits, is truly admirable. His acts of kindness and generosity remind us that even amid challenging times, compassion can bring people together and make a positive difference.
As consumers continue to grapple with rising food prices, Rajesh’s efforts serve as a reminder that empathy and community support can go a long way in alleviating the hardships faced by many. Let us cherish and recognize the efforts of individuals like Rajesh, who strive to make a difference in the lives of others.
