Eleven community and arts organizations in Stoke-on-Trent are set to receive a cash boost of £2.1 million from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund. The funding will support a range of projects aimed at revitalizing the local community and promoting cultural activities in the area.
One of the major beneficiaries of the funding is the renovation of the Portland Inn, a former pub in Hanley. The £496,290 investment will enable the transformation of the venue into a community hub for various art projects. This initiative is part of the ongoing regeneration efforts in the neighborhood, which had previously hosted the successful houses for a £1 scheme. The Portland Inn will provide a dedicated space for artists and creators to showcase their work and stage events.
The Spode Museum will also receive a substantial amount of funding, with £282,000 allocated for the creation of The Spode Museum Mixing Bowl. This project involves refurbishing the tearoom/café, establishing an outdoor green space, setting up an art gallery, and providing community meeting rooms and studio/workshop spaces. These enhancements will encourage more visitors to explore the museum and engage in artistic activities.
In addition to these projects, funds will be allocated to initiatives such as hands-on engagement with clay, waterside activities along the canal and river network, and a program of large-scale events in Longton town centre. The aim is to create vibrant spaces and cultural opportunities that will attract both residents and tourists to Stoke-on-Trent.
Councillor Jane Ashworth, leader of Stoke-on-Trent City Council, expressed her delight at the funding allocation and emphasized the importance of these projects in enhancing the local community. She also highlighted the support provided by the Citizens Advice Bureau, which will enable residents to receive financial advice and assistance in accessing benefits and tax credits.
The funding announcement is part of the Government’s levelling up vision, which aims to invest in communities and stimulate economic growth across the UK. Further allocations for the people and skills and supporting local business categories will be announced in the coming weeks.
