Former Waterford Councillor Davy Walsh, a dedicated servant to the people of Waterford, has passed away at the age of 79. Known for his progressive ideals and unwavering commitment to his community, Walsh leaves behind a legacy that will be remembered for years to come.

Walsh, an Alderman of the Waterford Corporation and member of the Workers Party, began his political career in 1979 when he was first elected as a Councillor. Throughout his time in office, Walsh worked tirelessly to improve the lives of those he represented and was involved in various important committees, including the South East Regional Authority, Waterford City VEC, Local Traveller Accommodation Consultative Committee, Transportation & Infrastructural Strategic Policy Committee (SPC), and the Economic Development & Planning SPC.

One of Walsh’s notable achievements came in 1982 when he became the first Councillor in Ireland to lead a campaign against domestic water rates. This initiative showcased his determination to fight for the rights and interests of the people he served. Walsh’s dedication to his constituents extended beyond his role as a Councillor, as he was also a prominent figure in supporting local groups and in working towards the betterment of St. Patrick’s Hospital.

In 2013, Walsh’s lifetime of service to the city was recognized when a campaign was launched to elect him as the Mayor of Waterford. This endeavor garnered support from both sports stars and local personalities, a testament to the significant impact Walsh had made on the community. Though his bid for mayor was unsuccessful, it was clear that his contributions had not gone unnoticed.

Tragically, Walsh’s political career came to an end in 2014 when he was eliminated after the ninth count in the elections. However, his passion for serving the people of Waterford remained undiminished, and he continued to be highly regarded among his peers and constituents until his passing.

Davy Walsh is survived by his beloved wife Betty and their children Jennifer, Róisín, Rory, David, and Jack, as well as his grandchildren Luke, Mathieu, Tom, Fionn, Lucy, Cormac, Ciaran, and Seb. He is also survived by his brother Sean and sister Breda (Brown), along with extended family, friends, and neighbors.

The funeral arrangements for Davy Walsh include a viewing at Power’s Funeral Home in Ferrybank on July 8, followed by a removal to The Sacred Heart Church. Requiem Mass will take place on July 9, followed by burial in the adjoining cemetery. For those unable to attend in person, the funeral Mass will be live-streamed on ferrybankslieverueparishes.ie/ferrybank-webcam/.

The passing of Davy Walsh leaves a void in the Waterford community, but his unwavering dedication to public service and his legacy of progress will continue to resonate with those who knew him. As Waterford mourns the loss of a respected leader, it is clear that Davy Walsh’s contributions to the city will be cherished and remembered for generations to come.
