In June, ChatGPT, developed by OpenAI and backed by Microsoft Corp, saw a decline in popularity as website traffic and app downloads dipped. This comes after the chatbot experienced exponential growth, boasting an estimated 100 million monthly users within its first two months. ChatGPT gained traction due to its ability to engage in complex conversations, write poetry, and even pass professional exams. However, its decline in popularity can be attributed to several factors.

According to Sensor Tower, downloads of ChatGPT’s iPhone app, launched in May, have steadily decreased since its peak in June. This decline may indicate a waning interest from users. Moreover, as people began to encounter the chatbot spreading false information, doubts emerged regarding its effectiveness and reliability. This led many companies to ban their employees from using ChatGPT, fearing potential leaks of sensitive data.

Furthermore, high costs associated with running AI chatbots have been a concern. OpenAI has attempted to address this issue by lowering the cost of operating the bot, which has led to a drop in quality. Analysts believe that this compromise might have contributed to the decline in user satisfaction.

The end of the school year in the U.S. and Europe might have also played a role in the decrease in usage. With students on summer break, the demand for AI tools like ChatGPT might have diminished.

Additionally, looming regulations and new rules in the European Union have prompted AI companies, including OpenAI, to limit the capabilities of their chatbots. This cautious approach aims to avoid potential legal complications and ensure compliance with future regulations.

While ChatGPT’s popularity has taken a hit, it’s important to acknowledge the impact it had during its peak. Many individuals, including computer coders, office workers, and students, embraced the chatbot to streamline their work processes. In some cases, companies even replaced copywriters with ChatGPT, showcasing the trust placed in its abilities.

Moving forward, it remains to be seen how OpenAI will address the concerns surrounding ChatGPT and regain users’ trust. As the competition in the AI space continues to intensify, it is crucial for companies like OpenAI to constantly refine their products and address any issues that may arise, ensuring reliable and accurate AI-powered solutions.
