Goa: Sewage Chambers Overflow As Rain Water Fills Underground Sewerage Line
Margao, Goa – The underground sewerage line in Margao has come under scrutiny as rainwater continues to infiltrate the system, causing sewage chambers to overflow in the city. Questions have arisen regarding the construction of the underground line and the responsibility of contractors in rectifying the faults before the Public Works Department (PWD) takes possession of the line.
In recent days, a number of sewage chambers have been gushing rainwater mixed with sewage, creating an unsightly and unhygienic situation. Notably, the overflowing sewage chamber near the Margao Municipal building passage has been discharging raw sewage onto the passage and into the adjoining drain. Furthermore, the sewage chamber on the eastern side of the Municipal Council building has been overflowing relentlessly for the past two days, exacerbating the issue.
Responding to the situation, Margao Municipal Chairperson Damu Shirodkar attributed the overflowing sewerage chambers within the building passage to the backflow of sewage water from the underground line. However, seeking clarification from sewerage officials about the overflowing chambers may lead to another explanation as they might attribute the issue to rainwater infiltration into the underground sewage line. This raises further questions about the scale of rainwater infiltration and whether it is entering the line through stormwater nallahs, sewage chambers, or through joints inside the line.
This is not the first time that overflowing sewage chambers have been observed during heavy rains in Margao. The key question remains unanswered: Has the Sewerage Infrastructure Development Corporation of Goa Ltd (SIDCGL) addressed the issues by instructing the contractors responsible for the underground line to rectify the faults, or is the agency awaiting intervention from the PWD to initiate repairs?
Some of these sewage chambers also experienced overflowing during previous rain events, suggesting that the SIDCGL or the PWD may not have repaired the line or identified the root cause of the problem over the past year.
It is crucial to address these concerns promptly to prevent further incidents of sewage overflow during heavy rainfall. It remains ambiguous whether the fault lies with the contractors, the execution of the underground sewerage line, or the ongoing maintenance efforts. A comprehensive investigation is necessary to identify the exact cause and implement the appropriate solutions.
As residents and authorities grapple with this recurring issue, it is imperative that the responsible agencies take decisive and immediate action to rectify the underground sewerage line’s faults and prevent rainwater infiltration. The health and well-being of the community depend on swift resolutions to this ongoing problem.
In the coming days, it is hoped that clarity will emerge regarding the responsibility for repairs and the steps taken to ensure the timely rectification of the underground sewerage line. Goa’s residents deserve a robust and reliable sewage system that can withstand heavy rains without causing distress to the public and environmental hazards.
The future maintenance and upkeep of this vital infrastructure must remain a top priority for the authorities, ensuring that the underground sewerage line in Margao operates seamlessly and effectively, safeguarding the community from the consequences of rainwater infiltration and sewage overflow.
Only through collective efforts and a commitment to executing repair and maintenance responsibilities can Margao’s underground sewerage line be restored to its full functionality, providing the residents with a clean and livable environment.
