A 65-year-old man was discovered dead in his car in Death Valley National Park in California on Monday. The National Park Service (NPS) has stated that the cause of death was extreme heat. The man’s identity has not been revealed.

According to a press release from the NPS, a maintenance worker found the man’s car about 30 yards away from the North Highway. This particular road had recently reopened in February after being closed due to extensive flood damage.

Upon finding the vehicle, the worker noticed the man inside was unresponsive. The worker promptly contacted park rangers, officials from the Inyo County Sheriff’s Office, and the Inyo County Coroner’s Office, who all swiftly responded to the scene.

The NPS press release mentioned that the sedan’s tracks indicated it had traveled along the road shoulder and rocky berm before veering further away from the paved road. Although the car had not crashed, it had two flat tires when it came to a stop.

On the day prior to the man’s unfortunate discovery, Death Valley experienced scorching temperatures, with the thermometer peaking at 126 Fahrenheit.

Upon initial investigation, the NPS suspects that the man may have suffered from a heat-related illness while driving, leading him to veer off the road. The man’s car was found to be functioning, although the air conditioner was broken. Additionally, the driver’s window was rolled down.

Death Valley is widely known for having one of the hottest climates in the world, attracting many tourists eager to experience its extreme weather. Unfortunately, deaths due to extreme heat in the area are not uncommon.

In a similar incident in June 2022, a man lost his life when he walked under Death Valley’s scorching 123-degree heat in search of gas for his car. And back in August 2019, a woman visiting Death Valley during the summer was also found dead.

Insider reached out to the NPS for further comment but did not receive an immediate response.

The tragic death of the 65-year-old man serves as a reminder of the dangers posed by extreme heat in Death Valley. Visitors to the area should take necessary precautions to ensure their safety, such as carrying ample water supplies and avoiding prolonged exposure to the blistering temperatures.

While we await further information about this specific incident, it is vital to prioritize safety and well-being when exploring such extreme environments. It is essential to stay informed about weather conditions and adhere to guidelines provided by park officials and local authorities.

The NPS continues to work diligently to ensure visitor safety and maintain the park’s infrastructure. It is crucial that everyone remains vigilant and takes necessary precautions to protect themselves when venturing into Death Valley’s harsh climate.
