Will Donald Trump Skip GOP Debates and What Does It Say About His Fear of Facing Rivals?

Will Donald Trump Avoid the GOP Debates?

Candidate debates have long been a crucial part of presidential campaigns, providing voters with the opportunity to see how candidates perform under pressure and allowing lesser-known contenders to gain exposure alongside the front-runners. These debates have proven influential in shaping the outcome of primaries, such as Barack Obama’s successful performance against Hillary Clinton in 2008 and Donald Trump’s rise in 2016. However, it appears that Trump is considering skipping the upcoming Republican National Committee (RNC) debate scheduled for August 23 in Milwaukee.

Trump and his advisors have suggested that he may not participate in the debate, citing his discontent with Fox News, the network hosting the event. According to him, Fox News wants him to show up and boost their ratings, while also promoting Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, whom Trump seemingly sees as his potential rival. Trump took to his newly launched social media platform, Truth Social, to voice his grievances, declaring that things don’t work that way.

Although Trump’s animosity towards Fox News may be the immediate reason for his hesitancy, it is more likely that his real motivation is the fear of giving his opponents a platform to challenge him before a large TV audience. Currently leading in GOP nomination polls by a significant margin, Trump is unwilling to take any risks that could potentially erode his advantage. Some of his advisors have even suggested that he could hold a rally at the same time as the debate, leaving his competitors to battle amongst themselves.

While Trump may not have a legal obligation to participate in the debates, he does have a responsibility to respect the voters who rely on these debates to make informed decisions. By avoiding the opportunity to engage with his rivals in a fair and open forum, Trump risks alienating voters who may consider other candidates based on impressive debate performances.

In contrast to the 2016 election, where Trump’s opponents hesitated to challenge him directly, this time around, they are ready to take him on. DeSantis, currently second in most polls, can offer a stark contrast in age, as the 44-year-old governor stands against the 77-year-old Trump. Former Vice President Mike Pence may challenge Trump on foreign policy and abortion, while former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie has emerged as an effective critic in New Hampshire town halls.

While no one can compel Trump to participate in the debates, the RNC could help by dropping its rule that requires all debaters to pledge their support for the eventual nominee. Although this rule is theoretically beneficial, Trump could use it as an excuse not to debate, rendering the pledge meaningless. Removing this requirement would not only eliminate a potential barrier for other candidates, but it would also encourage Trump to engage in the debates.

Ultimately, if Trump refuses to debate in the primaries, voters will be left wondering what the former president is afraid of. Debates play a crucial role in examining the candidates’ policies, strengths, and weaknesses, and withholding from this essential aspect of the campaign raises questions about Trump’s confidence in defending his positions and engaging with his opponents. Whether or not Trump decides to participate, the debates remain a vital platform for voters to assess the presidential candidates, making it imperative for all contenders to embrace the opportunity to engage with the American people.
