Three graduating resident physicians have chosen to continue their careers with Adena Health, a healthcare system located in Chillicothe, Ohio. Kayla Hazlett, DO, expressed her enthusiasm for working in a rural setting, particularly one that she is familiar with, as she grew up in Hillsboro, Washington Court House, and London, Ohio. Hazlett completed a three-year family medicine residency with Adena Health and decided to join the permanent staff at Chillicothe Family Physicians.
Her husband, Kyle Hazlett, DO, also graduated from the residency program and accepted a position as a hospitalist with Apogee Physicians at Adena Regional Medical Center. The third graduate, Cara Swanson, DO, will be providing outpatient primary care services for Adena Internal Medicine.
Adena Health’s resident physician education program helps licensed doctors further their training in their desired specialty. This year’s graduating class consisted of four doctors in family medicine, five in internal medicine, and three in psychiatry. John DesMarais, MD, the designated institutional official for the GME program and family medicine residency program director, expressed excitement about having three graduates stay and practice locally.
Adena Health President and CEO, Jeff Graham, highlighted the importance of the graduate medical education program in developing the next generation of physicians. He commended the resilience of the graduates, who began their residencies during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Despite the challenges, they persevered and gained valuable experience.
The growth and reputation of Adena Health’s graduate medical education program have been recognized, as all 15 spots in the incoming residency class were filled during the first round of recruiting. This is the first time in the 11-year history of Adena’s program that all residents were matched in the initial phase.
Dr. DesMarais acknowledged that this achievement reflects the program’s stellar reputation. Adena Health’s commitment to education and providing comprehensive healthcare services has attracted talented physicians from all over the country.
