Kingsmead Special School in Derby is set to welcome a wider age range of pupils as plans to expand the school’s intake are under consideration. Currently catering for children aged 11 to 16 years, the proposed change would allow students aged seven to 18 years to attend from September onwards. The school’s governing body, in collaboration with Derby City Council, has sought the opinions of pupils, parents, staff, and school leaders in order to develop the proposal.
The plan aims to address the demand for social, emotional, and mental health (SEMH) provision in the city. By creating an additional 20 places in years five and six, Kingsmead Special School would have a total of 110 places. Additionally, up to five personalized post-16 places would be offered. The expansion of specialist places would provide more opportunities for children and young people with special educational needs (SEND) to access education locally, rather than having to travel outside of the county.
Councillor John Whitby, the council cabinet member for children’s social care, learning, and skills, commented on the plan, saying, This is an exciting proposal that, if approved, would enable more children to access the education they require within their own community, close to their family and friends, and reduce the need for placements outside the area. It is part of a broader strategy to enhance Derby’s capacity to meet the needs of children with SEND, offering them every opportunity to live their best life.
Kingsmead Special School, located on Bridge Street, has been rated good by Ofsted since May 2016. During a recent inspection, students shared their positive experiences, stating that they feel welcomed and supported, even on difficult days. The school’s guiding principle of every day is a fresh start allows students to leave previous educational experiences behind. Students reported feeling safe within the school environment and demonstrated a deep respect for each other’s challenges and differences. The inspection also found that students feel free to express their emotions and beliefs, sometimes for the first time in an educational setting.
The expansion of special school places is not unique to Kingsmead Special School, as other schools in Derby have also undergone expansion. St Giles, Ivy House, St Andrew’s, and St Martin’s schools have all created additional places, and St Clare’s School is currently being rebuilt, with 35 new places included in the plans. St Clare’s School was recently judged outstanding by Ofsted.
The proposed expansion of Kingsmead Special School is a significant step in meeting the educational needs of children with SEND in Derby. If approved, it will provide more opportunities for local children to receive the support they require within their community, alongside their peers. The ongoing efforts to enhance the city’s capacity to support children with SEND demonstrate a commitment to ensuring every child has the opportunity to thrive and succeed.
