The Indian government’s Ministry of Women and Child Development (WCD) has called upon the Child Welfare and Protection Committee to identify orphaned and abandoned children living in villages who may require assistance. Through the Mission Vatsalya Scheme, these children will be offered support through sponsorship, foster care, and adoption.
A senior government official from the WCD Ministry stated that the Child Welfare and Protection Committee will recommend the eligible children for sponsorship, which will then be approved by the Sponsorship and Foster Care Approval Committee. The respective states and union territories will be requested to extend sponsorship facilities to these children based on the recommendations.
The sponsorship program aims to provide financial assistance to vulnerable children who live with extended families or biological relatives. This support will help them meet their education, nutrition, and health needs. The sponsorship will be available in two types – government-aided and private-aided.
In addition to sponsorship, the Mission Vatsalya Scheme also offers foster care arrangements for children. These arrangements involve assigning the responsibility of the child to an unrelated family for their rehabilitation. The foster parents will receive financial support to help raise the child.
Furthermore, the scheme aims to assist children who leave childcare institutions when they turn 18 years old. Financial assistance will be provided to help them integrate into mainstream society. This support may be extended from the age of 18 to 21 and can be further extended up to the age of 23 to enable these young adults to become self-dependent.
