Geraldine-based Downlands Deer and Studstock has recently undergone a significant expansion by acquiring Otago Deer Transport, a Milton-based company. This strategic takeover has allowed Downlands Deer to strengthen its position as a leading nationwide transporter of deer and stud stock. The merger brings together two highly reputable businesses and will undoubtedly benefit both companies and their clients.

Kris Orange, Managing Director of Downlands Deer, expressed excitement about the opportunity to merge with Otago Deer Transport. He stated, The team are very excited to have this opportunity to join forces and for both Dave Affleck and Hamish McLauchlan to join the Downland’s family. Orange also highlighted the excellent reputation of Otago Deer Transport, which has been built over many years through their commitment to providing exceptional care to the animals they transport.

Downlands Deer and Studstock, a family-owned business, has been operating since 1984, while Otago Deer Transport, run by Stephen and Sharon Grant, has served the industry for 23 years. With the acquisition, Downlands Deer now has an expanded fleet of 12 trucks, including three trucks in the Otago-Southland region. This strategic move allows Downlands Deer to better serve their clients in the area and meet the growing demand for deer transportation and stud stock delivery.

Stephen Grant, former owner of Otago Deer Transport, expressed gratitude towards all their loyal customers who have supported their business over the years. He stated, We wish to acknowledge and thank all those farmers who have supported us. Many of our clients have become great friends, and we are grateful for the trust they have put in us with their precious livestock transportation. Grant also mentioned that he plans to take a break from the industry, confident that their clients will be in good hands with the Downlands crew.

Downlands Deer’s current fleet is comprised of six trucks based in Geraldine, three trucks in Feilding, and three trucks in the Otago-Southland region. This expanded fleet allows Downlands Deer to efficiently handle transportation and delivery nationwide, ensuring that their clients’ animals arrive safely and on time.

The company’s transportation services extend beyond the deer industry, as they work closely with nationwide venison processors, including Duncan Venison, Mountain River, Firstlight, Silver Fern Farms, and Alliance. This partnership enables them to conduct two to three interisland trips each week, aiding in the efficient distribution of venison and other related products.

Downlands Deer handles all their dispatch and office administration from their headquarters in Geraldine. This centralized approach ensures smooth operations and effective coordination of their transportation services.

With their newly expanded fleet and enhanced capabilities, Downlands Deer is well-positioned to meet the growing demand for deer transportation and stud stock movement across the country. Their commitment to exceptional customer service and their strong reputation in the industry make them a preferred choice for many farmers and businesses.

Overall, the acquisition of Otago Deer Transport by Downlands Deer and Studstock represents a significant milestone for both companies. By joining forces, they have created a stronger and more robust entity that can provide even better services to their clients. This expansion reaffirms Downlands Deer’s commitment to delivering excellence in deer transportation and stud stock movement throughout New Zealand.
