Croatia defender Josko Gvardiol has expressed his desire to move to Manchester City, according to RB Leipzig’s sports director Max Eberl. While Manchester City is yet to make a bid, Gvardiol and his advisors have submitted their wish for a transfer to the English club.
Discussions are currently underway between RB Leipzig and Manchester City regarding the potential move. Reports suggest that the transfer fee for Gvardiol could reach £86m, making him the most expensive defender in the history of football.
Gvardiol played a significant role in helping Croatia reach the semi-finals of the World Cup in Qatar last year. Additionally, he was part of the Leipzig side that achieved success in the Bundesliga, finishing third, and won the German Cup last season. However, his Champions League journey was cut short by Manchester City, with Leipzig experiencing a 1-1 draw in Germany and a crushing 7-0 defeat at the Etihad Stadium.
If the move goes through, Gvardiol would join a list of high-profile players departing from RB Leipzig this summer, including Christopher Nkunku, Dominik Szoboszlai, and Konrad Laimer. Chelsea signed Nkunku, Liverpool acquired Szoboszlai, and Laimer joined Bayern Munich.
Eberl acknowledged the disappointment of the fans and the challenges of losing players of such caliber. However, RB Leipzig has been prepared for such situations and reassures supporters that they will assemble another strong and exciting team.
As negotiations continue between RB Leipzig and Manchester City, fans await further updates on Gvardiol’s potential move.
