Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools have become increasingly popular for generating content and information. However, they are not flawless, and concerns have been raised about their potential for spreading misinformation. A recent study conducted by researchers at the University of Zurich has shed light on this issue, specifically focusing on OpenAI’s GPT-3, one of the largest AI models released in 2020.
GPT-3, short for Generative Pre-trained Transformer 3, is capable of providing text completions in natural language when given a prompt or sentence. This AI model has gained traction across various industries, with over 300 apps currently utilizing its capabilities. However, the study aimed to explore the risks and benefits of AI models like GPT-3 in generating and disseminating accurate and misleading information.
The study, although not yet peer-reviewed, engaged 697 participants to evaluate their ability to distinguish between disinformation and accurate information presented in the form of tweets. The topics covered in this research included climate change, vaccine safety, the Covid-19 pandemic, flat earth theory, and homoeopathic treatments for cancer.
The results of the study revealed that GPT-3 possessed a dual nature. On one hand, it had the ability to generate accurate and easily understandable information, surpassing tweets from real Twitter users. However, the AI model also demonstrated a disconcerting aptitude for producing highly persuasive disinformation. Perhaps even more concerning was the fact that participants were unable to reliably differentiate between tweets created by GPT-3 and those written by actual Twitter users.
Federico Germani, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Zurich, emphasized the power of AI to both inform and mislead, which raises important questions about the future of information ecosystems. The study suggests that well-structured prompts evaluated by trained humans could create highly effective information campaigns using GPT-3, particularly in times of public health crises when the need for fast and clear communication is paramount.
The findings underscore the necessity for proactive regulation to mitigate the potential harm caused by AI-driven disinformation campaigns. Nikola Biller-Andorno, director of the Institute of Biomedical Ethics and History of Medicine at the University of Zurich, emphasized the critical importance of such regulation.
