Manipur insurgent groups, United People’s Front (UPF) and Kuki National Organisation (KNO), have decided to lift the blockade on National Highway-2 (NH-2) in an effort to ensure the uninterrupted supply of essential commodities in the violence-hit state of Manipur. The decision came after consultations with various stakeholders, including civil society organizations, village chiefs, youth, and women’s leaders.
Manipur has been plagued by ethnic violence between the Meiteis and Kuki Zo communities since May 3, 2023. The ongoing conflict has resulted in loss of lives, destruction of property, injuries, and displacement of thousands of people. The Kuki Zo people have expressed their anguish and urged the authorities to protect their lives and properties.
The Kuki Zo organizations previously met with Union Home Minister, Amit Shah, and appealed for security in the vulnerable villages along the foothills. They appreciate the deployment of central forces in most of these areas and anticipate the completion of the deployment in all vulnerable areas so that their volunteers can be withdrawn to restore peace and tranquility. The groups also called upon peace-loving organizations and citizens in Manipur to reciprocate their gesture and work towards peace and communal harmony in the state.
In a separate development, the curfew in West Imphal district will be relaxed from 5 am to 6 pm on Monday, allowing the general public to purchase essential items, such as medicines and food items. The decision comes after Chief Minister Biren Singh inspected the situation on the ground in the hills adjoining Bishnupur-Churachandpur.
The ethnic clashes in Manipur began after clashes broke out during a rally organized by the All Tribal Students Union (ATSU) to protest against the demand for the inclusion of Meiteis in the list of Scheduled Tribes (STs).
As efforts are made to restore peace in the state, it is crucial for all stakeholders to come together and work towards reconciliation and harmony. The lifting of the blockade on NH-2 is a positive step towards ensuring the uninterrupted supply of essential commodities to the people of Manipur. It is hoped that this move will contribute to the peaceful resolution of the conflict and the well-being of the affected communities.
