The Water Resources Department (WRD) in Chennai has unveiled plans to connect the Kosasthalaiyar and Arani rivers to tackle flooding and combat seawater intrusion. The department is conducting a feasibility study to determine the viability of the project, with the primary goal of reducing the impact of seawater intrusion on the residents of North Chennai.

To manage excess water in the Kosasthalaiyar river, the WRD is constructing a canal in select areas of Tiruvallur. Additionally, the department is proposing the construction of canals near Panchetti and Pudhuvayal villages to facilitate the interconnection of rivers. By implementing these measures, the WRD aims to effectively control seawater intrusion and improve groundwater levels, which have significantly declined in North Chennai.

Another official emphasized that the WRD is taking steps to prevent a recurrence of the devastating floods experienced in 2015. The river linking project is one such initiative, with inputs and suggestions from the Tiruppugazh committee. To ensure the project’s success, the state government is collaborating with a Japanese agency, conducting inspections, and commissioning a feasibility report for Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, and Tiruvalur. A budget of Rs 5 crore has been allocated for these efforts.

Clearing encroachments in river beds is also a key aspect of the WRD’s comprehensive plan. By addressing illegal encroachments, the department aims to enhance the effectiveness of flood prevention measures.

In conclusion, the Water Resources Department in Chennai is proactively working towards mitigating flooding and seawater intrusion by exploring the possibility of linking the Kosasthalaiyar and Arani rivers. These efforts, combined with the construction of canals and the removal of encroachments, are expected to improve the situation and protect the residents of North Chennai.
