England’s cricket team is pinning their hopes on Ben Stokes once again as they face off against Australia in the second Test match at Lord’s. With England needing a record-breaking 371 runs to win and avoid a 2-0 series defeat, Stokes remains unbeaten on 29 at the end of the fourth day.

The hosts had a shaky start, finding themselves at 45 for four due to the aggressive play from Australia’s fast bowlers. However, Stokes and Ben Duckett managed to guide the team to stumps, with Duckett’s recall causing controversy. Umpires decided that Mitchell Starc had grounded a boundary catch, leading to the decision being overturned. Former Australian fast bowler Glenn McGrath labeled the decision as a disgrace.

Stokes’s heroic performance at Headingley in the 2019 Ashes is still fresh in the minds of England’s team and fans. During that match, England needed 359 runs to win, and Stokes scored an incredible 135 to secure victory by one wicket. England’s batting coach, Marcus Trescothick, acknowledged the impact Stokes can have on the game, saying, There is always hope when Ben is there… If we can get a good start and someone can get a big score, we will definitely be challenging to knock this score off.

The controversy surrounding Duckett’s recall added late drama to the match. Starc appeared to take a clean catch but scraped the ball along the ground as he landed. McGrath criticized the decision, stating, That is the biggest load of rubbish that I’ve ever seen. If that’s not out, every catch I’ve ever seen taken should not be out. That is a disgrace. I’ve seen everything. That is ridiculous.

Trescothick compared the use of technology in cricket, including the third umpire’s intervention in Duckett’s case, to the controversial VAR system in football. He acknowledged that technology adds another layer to the game and emphasized the importance of trusting the process.

Despite losing four wickets in the final session, England’s dressing room remains hopeful. Trescothick highlighted the team’s belief, citing their past experiences, including Stokes’s heroics at Headingley, as reasons for their optimism.

While the second Test hangs in the balance, England will continue their fightback with Stokes leading the charge. His presence alone gives the team hope, but they will need others to step up and make significant contributions if they are to achieve an unlikely victory.

In other cricket news, West Indies suffered a major setback as they failed to qualify for the World Cup for the first time. Scotland caused a major upset by defeating the two-time champions with a seven-wicket win in a qualifying Super Six contest in Harare.

The battle between England and Australia at Lord’s intensifies as Stokes becomes the focal point of England’s fightback. As both teams aim for victory, it remains to be seen if Stokes can produce yet another miraculous performance to guide England to an improbable win against their arch-rivals. The outcome of the match hangs delicately in the balance, leaving cricket fans eagerly anticipating the final day’s play.
