Several Accidents on Samruddhi Expressway Raise Concerns About Government Inaction
In a tragic incident that occurred on Saturday, a private bus caught fire on the Samruddhi-Mahamarg Expressway in Buldhana, Maharashtra, claiming the lives of 25 passengers. Shiv Sena Member of Parliament, Sanjay Raut, expressed his grief over the incident, calling it extremely disheartening.
Raut openly criticized the Eknath Shinde-led government for allowing such accidents to happen frequently on this particular road, stating, Several accidents are taking place on this road, but the government is not paying heed to it. This incident has raised concerns about the safety measures and response strategies implemented by the authorities on the expressway.
The accident occurred around 1:30 am when the bus, en route from Nagpur to Pune, suffered a tire burst, resulting in flames engulfing the vehicle. Subsequently, the bus’s diesel tank caught fire, further exacerbating the situation. The exact cause of the accident is still under investigation, although initial reports point to the tire burst as the trigger.
Out of the total 33 people onboard the ill-fated bus, three were children and the rest were adults. The injured were rushed to Buldhana Civil Hospital, where Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis visited to meet and console the victims.
Fadnavis, however, ruled out road construction as the cause of the accident, highlighting the need for a thorough investigation to determine the exact factors leading to such incidents.
The Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, announced an ex gratia of Rs. 2 lakh for the families of the deceased and Rs. 50,000 for the injured in the bus accident. Additionally, Union Home Minister Amit Shah expressed his grief and called the incident heartbreaking.
This latest accident on the Samruddhi Expressway adds to a series of similar incidents that have occurred on this stretch of road. The lack of proper safety measures and the government’s indifference to these repeated accidents has sparked outrage among citizens.
