Congress Leader and Himachal Pradesh Minister, Vikramaditya Singh, has expressed his support for the Uniform Civil Code, a stance that differs from his party’s position. The Congress party has faced criticism from several of its members who question the BJP-led government’s proposal for a Uniform Civil Code. Singh, however, stated that the Congress party will support the code whenever it is implemented, as the party has always contributed to unity and integrity.

Singh’s support for the Uniform Civil Code, which aims to provide a common set of personal laws for all citizens, regardless of their religion, has garnered attention due to the Congress party’s reservations about the proposal. Former Finance Minister P. Chidambaram criticized the BJP-led government, calling it an agenda-driven majoritarian government and labeling the proposal as tactics to divert attention from other issues.

Responding to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent endorsement of the Uniform Civil Code, Chidambaram emphasized that a nation is brought together by a political-legal document like the Constitution, unlike a family that is united by blood relationships. He argued that diversity is recognized in both families and nations and that a Uniform Civil Code cannot be forced upon the people by a majoritarian government.

Former Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister and BJP leader Jairam Thakur welcomed Singh’s remarks, stating that the decision to implement a Uniform Civil Code would be in the interest of the nation and society. Thakur emphasized the importance of a law that applies equally to all citizens, regardless of their background.

The Law Commission recently sought public views and ideas on the proposal for a Uniform Civil Code. However, Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh criticized the move, claiming that it represents the BJP’s desperation for a legitimate justification of its failures. Ramesh cited the 21st Law Commission, which previously deemed a Uniform Civil Code unnecessary and undesirable at that time.

Vikramaditya Singh criticized the BJP for using issues like the Uniform Civil Code as a diversion from more pressing matters. He brought attention to the situation in Manipur, where the BJP has failed to address the ongoing conflicts.

The Congress Party is set to hold a meeting to discuss the Uniform Civil Code and its stance on the matter. The Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Uniform Civil Code is also scheduled to have a discussion on the topic to gather the views of various stakeholders.

In conclusion, Vikramaditya Singh’s support for the Uniform Civil Code differs from his party’s position. The proposal has drawn criticism from Congress members, while the BJP sees it as an important step for societal unity. The debate surrounding the Uniform Civil Code continues, with different perspectives and opinions being voiced.
