The Special Task Force (STF) of Odisha Police has made an arrest in connection with an OTP (one-time password) sharing scam. Abhijeet Sanjay Jambure, an employee of a software firm, was apprehended in Pune on June 29 and subsequently brought to Bhubaneswar.

Jambure, who holds a postgraduate degree in statistics from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel University in Gujarat, had been in contact with two Pakistani intelligence officials for an extended period, according to STF officials. In 2018, he met a freelancer named Syed Danish Ali Naqvi from Faisalabad, Pakistan on Facebook Messenger. Jambure shared his user ID and password for Chegg, an American education technology company, with Naqvi.

Naqvi proceeded to work on Chegg using Jambure’s credentials, with the earnings being credited to Jambure’s Indian account. In return for this arrangement, Jambure was required to perform certain tasks for Naqvi. The STF claims that Naqvi then introduced Jambure to his friend Khurram alias Abdul Hamid from Karachi, who is believed to be a senior intelligence officer in the Pakistan Army. Khurram allegedly has a significant network of agents in India and instructed Jambure in transferring money to various persons of interest working in India.

The STF also revealed that Jambure had communicated with seven Pakistani citizens and ten Nigerian citizens through WhatsApp. Earlier, the STF had uncovered cryptocurrency trading worth Rs. 1 crore (approximately $134,000) involving two individuals from the OTP sharing gang.

Thus far, a total of six individuals have been arrested for their involvement in sharing the OTPs of pre-activated SIM cards with criminals and suspected Pakistani agents. The STF is currently conducting further investigations to apprehend any other individuals implicated in the scam.
