Moldova has announced plans to purchase and store half of its natural gas stock in Romania in preparation for the winter. With Moldova lacking the necessary storage capacity, the gas will be procured from OMV Petrom and stored by Depogaz, a company owned by Romgaz. The decision comes as Moldova aims to ensure its energy security during the colder months.

The Republic of Moldova currently has a total security stock of 50 million cubic meters (approximately 530 GWh), and it is estimated that 25 million cubic meters (approximately 265 GWh) will be stored in Romania. While this amount may seem relatively small, accounting for only 0.78% of Romania’s storage capacity, it will contribute significantly to Moldova’s energy needs.

Romania’s gas storage capacity through Depogaz and Depomures stands at 33.86 TWh. As of June 26, Romania had already stored 22.5 TWh, equivalent to 66.5% of its total capacity. The partnership between Moldova and Romania will help ensure the stability and reliability of gas supply to Moldova throughout the winter season.

Contracts between Moldova’s state energy company, Energocom, and natural gas suppliers have already been signed. The first deliveries of gas to be stored in Romania will take place next month. Moldova is reported to have negotiated with two suppliers, including the Greek company DEPA and OMV Petrom from Romania. While specific details and prices have not been disclosed due to competition regulations, the contracted companies have proven to be reputable and have offered costs that align closely with Moldova’s expectations.

According to Victor Parlicov, the Minister of Energy in Chisinau, Moldova may even store more of its gas in Romania in the future. This possibility was mentioned following a bilateral meeting between the energy working group of Moldova and Romania. With Romania’s storage facilities having a capacity of approximately 3 billion cubic meters of gas and over 2 billion cubic meters already stored, the goal is to approach full coverage of the European Commission’s requirement of 90%.

In addition to their joint gas storage efforts, Romania and Moldova are currently discussing projects to connect their natural gas and electricity networks. A draft Memorandum of Understanding has been developed as part of these negotiations.

The decision to purchase and store gas in Romania reflects both countries’ commitment to ensuring energy security and stability. By leveraging Romania’s storage capacity, Moldova will be better equipped to meet its energy needs during the winter. The partnership between the two nations also highlights the importance of regional cooperation in the energy sector.
