The Holy Makkah Municipality has revealed some staggering statistics regarding the waste generated during this year’s Hajj pilgrimage. With over 68,000 tons of waste generated in just 12 days, the scale of the cleanup operation is truly immense.

To tackle this monumental task, the Municipality has employed a workforce of 13,549 workers, including cleaners, drivers, supervisors, and observers of cleanliness. Out of this number, 7,250 workers have been dedicated to the holy sites, ensuring that they remain clean and sanitary throughout the pilgrimage.

In addition to the dedicated workforce, the Municipality has deployed a total of 912 pieces of cleaning equipment, with 438 of them stationed in the holy sites themselves. The cleaning efforts have also been supported by the operation of six mobile cleaning stations and the distribution of nine waste compactor trucks.

To efficiently manage the waste generated, the Municipality has established a temporary storage system, consisting of 111 ground storage units and 1,071 compact boxes strategically distributed across the holy sites. These storage units are an integral part of the operational plan, facilitating the proper disposal and management of the waste.

Notably, the Municipality has taken several measures to protect the workers from the harsh conditions. Given that this year’s Hajj coincides with peak summer, the work has been divided into two shifts, with morning and evening workers to avoid the scorching noon heat. This step emphasizes the Municipality’s commitment to the well-being and safety of the workers who play a vital role in maintaining the hygiene and cleanliness of the holy sites.

The efforts put forth by the Holy Makkah Municipality are evidence of their dedication to hygiene and environmental sanitation during the Hajj season. Recognizing the importance of maintaining cleanliness for the health and well-being of the pilgrims throughout their journey in Makkah and the holy sites, the Municipality has spared no effort to ensure a clean and comfortable experience for all.

It is crucial to address the issue of waste management during Hajj, as it has both health and environmental implications. The massive influx of pilgrims can put a strain on the existing infrastructure and create challenges in waste disposal. However, the Holy Makkah Municipality has risen to the occasion, implementing a comprehensive plan to handle the waste generated during this significant religious event.

Apart from taking the necessary steps to manage the waste, it is also essential to raise awareness among the pilgrims about the importance of responsible waste disposal. Encouraging pilgrims to dispose of their waste in designated areas and to follow sustainable practices can go a long way in reducing the overall waste generated and maintaining cleanliness.

While the statistics may be alarming, it is heartening to see the commitment and effort invested by the Holy Makkah Municipality to address the waste management challenge during Hajj. With their rigorous cleaning contracts, efficient waste disposal systems, and dedicated workforce, they are setting an example for responsible waste management practices. Their efforts serve as a reminder of the importance of environmental conservation and maintaining cleanliness in the holy sites.

As the Hajj pilgrimage continues to grow in scale and significance, it is important for all stakeholders involved to prioritize sustainable waste management practices. By collectively working towards this goal, we can ensure a cleaner and more environmentally friendly Hajj experience for future generations of pilgrims. The Holy Makkah Municipality’s efforts should serve as an inspiration for other cities and organizations to adopt similar measures and make a positive impact on the environment.
