The Indian women’s hockey team is determined to claim the gold medal in the upcoming Asian Games after their heartbreaking loss in the final of the 2018 edition, according to skipper Savita. The Asian Games will be held in Hangzhou in September and October.

Speaking in the latest episode of the podcast series Hockey Te Charcha, Savita expressed the team’s determination to finish on top this time. She highlighted the importance of winning the gold medal to secure direct qualification for the Paris Olympics, which would enable them to focus on the FIH Pro League and Paris 2024 afterwards.

Savita, who took over the captaincy after the Tokyo Olympics, shared her enjoyment of the dual role of goalkeeping and leadership. She emphasized the added responsibility that comes with leading the team and the importance of supporting her teammates, especially the younger and less-experienced ones, by sharing her experience with them.

The star goalkeeper also highlighted the growth of Indian women’s hockey, both in terms of financial independence for the players and increased recognition for the sport. She compared the current situation to when she joined the team in 2008, mentioning the positive changes in facilities, exposure, and respect for women’s hockey in the country. Savita pointed out that players now have regular jobs and are able to build houses for their families, demonstrating the progress of the sport in the right direction.

Overall, Savita’s remarks reflect the team’s determination to win the gold medal at the Asian Games and their aspirations for the future of Indian women’s hockey. The players are motivated by the opportunity to secure direct qualification for the Paris Olympics and continue their progress in the subsequent tournaments. With the growth and recognition of women’s hockey in India, the team is confident in their ability to achieve their goals and make the country proud.
