Townsend Police Offer Safety Tips for July 4 Celebrations

As residents gear up to celebrate Independence Day, Townsend Police Chief James Sartell is sharing important safety tips and reminders. With a focus on preventing fires, injuries, and accidents, the police department wants to ensure that everyone has a safe and enjoyable Fourth of July.

Fireworks have long been a staple of Independence Day celebrations, but it’s essential to use them responsibly. In Massachusetts, it is illegal for private citizens to use, possess, or sell fireworks of any kind without a license and a permit. This includes fireworks purchased legally in other states and brought into Massachusetts. Violating these laws can result in fines ranging from $10 to $1,000 and even a prison sentence.

Illegal fireworks have proven to be a significant cause of concern and danger. Between 2013 and 2022, Massachusetts fire departments reported nearly 1,000 fires related to illegal fireworks. These fires resulted in 42 fire service injuries, five civilian injuries, and approximately $2.5 million in damages. Medical facilities also reported around 30 severe burn injuries exceeding 5% of the victims’ bodies caused by illegal fireworks. In 2022 alone, fire departments recorded 106 fires and explosions linked to fireworks, reflecting a 30% increase compared to the previous year.

To address this issue, Chief Sartell urges residents to report any instances of fireworks misuse they observe in the community. By doing so, they can help keep their neighborhoods safe and prevent potential accidents or injuries.

In addition to fireworks safety, Chief Sartell emphasizes the importance of responsible alcohol consumption during Fourth of July celebrations. Alcohol and fireworks do not mix, and impaired individuals should refrain from handling or using fireworks. Driving under the influence is also a significant concern. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, between 2017 and 2021, 38% of drivers killed in motor vehicle crashes over the Fourth of July holiday period were drunk. To ensure everyone’s safety, motorists are advised to always wear seat belts, avoid driving under the influence, and designate a sober driver or use a ride-share service if they plan to consume alcohol.

The Townsend Police Department also reminds residents to take precautions for their pets’ well-being. The loud noises and flashing lights from fireworks can be frightening to animals, causing them to run away from their homes and potentially become lost. It is recommended to keep pets indoors during fireworks displays to ensure their safety and minimize any anxiety or stress they may experience.

By following these safety tips and guidelines, residents can have a fun and incident-free Fourth of July celebration. Chief Sartell and the Townsend Police Department encourage community members to report any illegal fireworks activities to help protect everyone’s well-being. In case of emergencies or firework-related incidents, always dial 911 for assistance.

Together, let’s prioritize safety and create a memorable and safe Fourth of July for all.
