Nigeria’s Rugby Sevens team, the Black Stallions, have climbed up 13 places in the latest ranking released by Rugby Afrique, moving from 24th to 11th place in Africa. The impressive rise in the rankings comes after their excellent performances at the Rugby Sevens Pre Olympic Qualifiers held in Mauritius.

In the tournament, the Black Stallions showcased their skills and determination, reaching the final where they unfortunately lost 24-5 to Algeria. However, their path to the final was marked by a series of dominant victories. They began with a resounding 24-7 win over Ghana in the opening match, followed by a commanding 43-14 victory against Burundi. In their final group match, the Stallions displayed their superiority with a remarkable 43-0 win over Congo.

Advancing to the quarter-finals, the team, led by Coach Steve Lewis, continued their remarkable form, dismantling Botswana 33-5 to secure a spot in the semi-finals. There, they faced a highly motivated Cote D’Ivoire side, but the Stallions emerged victorious with a 20-12 scoreline. The loss to Algeria in the final was the only setback for Nigeria throughout the pre-qualifier tournament.

One of the remarkable aspects of Nigeria’s performance was the inclusion of eight new debutants in the team. Players such as Awobowale Olukolade Mobolaji, Esiri Aaron, Asher Chinedu, Goualin Pierre Henri, Henrry-Ajudua Chukwuyem Frederick, Ilube Matthew Maurice, Lipede Adenekan Jojoola, Odunlami Oluwadara Olufewa, and Onyeahasi Alexander George made their mark in their first appearance for the national team. Alongside them were experienced players like Ono Jatto, Gabriel John, Declan Nwachukwu, and David Aniebonam, who provided leadership and stability.

The Black Stallions’ remarkable rise in the rugby rankings is a testament to their hard work, dedication, and talent. It reflects the growth of rugby in Nigeria and the potential the country possesses in the sport. With their recent performances, it is clear that Nigerian rugby is on an upward trajectory.

Moving forward, the Black Stallions will aim to build on their success and continue their climb up the rankings. They have proven that they are capable of competing against strong African nations, and their sights are now set on even greater achievements in international rugby. The team’s rise is a source of pride for Nigeria and demonstrates the country’s ability to excel in various sports disciplines.

In conclusion, Nigeria’s rugby sevens team, the Black Stallions, has made a significant leap in the rankings, climbing from 24th to 11th in Africa. Their impressive performances at the Rugby Sevens Pre Olympic Qualifiers in Mauritius showcased their potential and determination. With a mix of talented newcomers and experienced players, the team has set the stage for a promising future in Nigerian rugby. As they continue to hone their skills and compete on the international stage, the Black Stallions will undoubtedly be a force to be reckoned with.
