Pakistan Football Chiefs Urged to Focus on Local Players by Former Coach Tariq Lutfi

Former Pakistan coach, Tariq Lutfi, has called on the country’s football authorities to prioritize home-grown players in order to help the nation succeed on the international stage. Lutfi’s comments come after Pakistan’s disappointing performance in recent tournaments, where they lost all three matches.

Lutfi believes that there is not a significant gap in quality between local players and those based abroad. However, he argues that the commitment and dedication of home-grown players give them an advantage over their foreign-based counterparts. Lutfi points out that Pakistan has not only competed closely with, but also defeated, the strong Indian side in the past.

Expressing his concern, Lutfi questions the decision to overlook key players in the national team. He believes that talented individuals like Saddam Hussain, former Pakistan captain, and Waqar, a stopper from Khan Research Laboratories (KRL), have been unfairly disregarded. Lutfi also highlights the absence of Qadeer and Bilal, who were in good form. According to him, these omissions set a bad example and raise doubts about the authorities’ decision-making process.

Lutfi is fundamentally against the inclusion of foreign-based players in the national team. He argues that while these players may possess quality, they are unable to withstand the demands and pressures of representing Pakistan. Lutfi questions the effectiveness of inviting large numbers of foreign players if they are not given sufficient time to train and integrate with the local players.

The former coach also criticizes the Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) for what he sees as injustice and stubbornness. Lutfi feels that important decisions are being made without input from knowledgeable football experts or experienced players. He expresses confusion over the arrangements made with foreign players and implies that such deals may be compromising the integrity of the game.

Lutfi points out that the participation of teams like Kuwait and Lebanon in the South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) Cup indicates their decline and attempts to revive their squads. He questions the purpose of bringing in numerous foreign players if Pakistan still suffers a significant defeat against these teams.

Recalling a past SAFF Cup tournament held in Karachi, Lutfi praises the performance of local player Tanvir, who outperformed foreign-based defender Zesh Rehman. Lutfi believes that local players are more committed and dedicated to giving their best effort, as foreign-based players may fear injury.

Lutfi emphasizes the need for a fair and supportive environment for young Pakistani players. He argues that without a promising future in the game, it becomes difficult to motivate young talent to continue playing football.

In conclusion, Lutfi supports the inclusion of players like Waheed, who he feels have been overlooked. He suggests that holding PFF elections would be beneficial, as an elected body would make decisions that truly benefit the development of Pakistani football.

Lutfi’s comments highlight the importance of nurturing local talent and challenging the current trend of relying heavily on foreign-based players. By refocusing on home-grown players and creating a supportive system, Pakistan football authorities have the opportunity to strengthen the national team and make a positive impact on the international stage.
